Reflections

The Beads of Courage Artist Challenge is always a special day.  Firing up the torch, I found myself surrounded by close friends and talented artists giving so freely of their time and skills.  I deeply admire their selfless gift of service.  Having a son born with a congenital heart defect, Beads of Courage is a cause near and dear to my heart on so many levels.

Courageous children, who have requested special beads, gather around the studio tables as the glass enters the flame.  Skilled artisans steady their hands as they begin to bring Dream Beads to life.  The molten glass starts to flow and a menagerie of one-of-a-kind beads fill the hot kilns.  Happy ladybugs, alien-like monsters, smiling minions, superheroes, monkeys, and waddling ducks form a colorful parade of silliness.  Sounds of laughter echo in the bustling studio as whimsical designs take shape.  These beads will become unique Act of Courage beads, given to children on tough treatment days or to acknowledge milestones.

Sheer amazement is visible in the children’s inquisitive eyes as they watch the dance of molten glass.  Creativity floods their eager minds as beads take shape.  In this moment, the children forget about their serious illnesses and the daily struggles.  Their thoughts drift away to the endless possibilities of glass.  Parents’ hearts are filled with happiness as they see their child’s wonder.  On this day, I have watched parents hold back tears, while children smile with joy.  This is the reason why so many love the National Bead Challenge Day.  The delightful scene is repeated in glass studios around the world.  Artists as a collective inspire hope, one bead at a time.
The children are full of questions.  Many are concerned for the artist’s safety and ask, “Have you ever burnt yourself?”  In the child’s eyes, the artists are brave souls who tame fire and molten glass.  In our eyes, the children are the brave ones.  Each bead on their elaborate necklace stands as significant evidence of their courageous spirit, a record of their story.  They are gallant heroes in every sense of the word.

A Splash of Color

Harvest Time: Zombie Squirrel Eyeballs

The kids woke up bright and early, dawned their kevlar lined hazmat suits, and ventured outside to gather up some zombie squirrel eyeballs.  Like picking up pebbles on the beach, the plagued peepers just roll right out of their little eye sockets.  A bountiful harvest indeed!  After a quick rinse to remove the crusties, the petrified eyeballs are ready to be strung and worn in a Halloween jewelry design.  They measure approximately 10 mm in diameter.  Just message me on FB if you are interested in a set.

Leonardo da Veggie

Biography of Leonardo da Veggie
-Artist, Mathematician, Inventor, Writer, Lover of fine Salads
As a leading artist and intellectual of the Italian Renaissance, his enduring works "The Last Supper... until Snacktime" and "Mona Lettuce" have influenced countless artists.
(Pictured above is a close up of Leonardo's famous painting, "Mona Lettuce" currently held in the special D'art de Rongeur Collection at the Louvre in Paris.)

He studied the laws of science and nature, which greatly informed his work as a painter, sculptor, architect, inventor, military engineer and draftsman. His inventions include useful items like the catapult for launching tossed salad over high walls and the hamster wheel for keeping a trim physique.

Lucky Goldfish

The enamel detail is extremely small. To give you an idea of size, the beads measure 15mm in diameter x 15mm long. The picture continues around bead's surface with the fish swimming towards tiny flakes of food.

Seed Spitting Contest

It is heating up and a slice of cold watermelon sounds mighty tasty right about now.  The first place winner of the seed spitting contest at the county fair goes to Ruggles with a distance of 2ft 3in.  It takes quite a pucker to generate such distance for a guinea pig.  Enjoy!

Thimble Buddy

Do you ever find yourself feeling lonely while darning a sock, mending a hole in a pair of britches, or adding the last stitch to a log cabin quilt? I have found a solution... Thimble Buddies! It doubles as a minature shot glass when flipped over (for those of you who can't sew or hold your liquor).

2015 Bead Artist Hall of Fame

It was an honor to be inducted into the Beads of Courage Glass Bead Artist Hall of Fame.  Jean, Robert and all of the dedicated staff at Beads of Courage make a difference daily in the lives of countless children courageously fighting childhood illnesses.

Baby Hedgehog

"Baby Hedgehog"

Fresh from the kiln and ready for the woodland.  The design sketch was pretty straight forward, however the color palette had me second guessing choices of glass from the start.  Truth be told, I changed the colors at the last minute.  The soft-bristle coat features grays, browns, black, gold, and ivory in a complex cane.  I bounced back and forth on the main body color until settling on a limited run from CiM.  The cheeks, well they are adorable...  all said, I'm thrilled with how the little guy turned out.
