Owl Necklace and Kiln Update

This past Autumn, Lauren called "dibbs" on this silly enamel owl. Finally had a chance to string him on a necklace with some fun swarovski crystal accents. Also thrilled to report that the replacement kiln element arrived today. I'm off to get the kiln up an running.

Spent the past couple days sketching designs, cleaning the studio, and reorganizing projects. The cross-stitch thread has never looked so tidy. The much needed downtime has helped in recouping from bronchitis. All in all, I'm antsy for the new element to arrive.

Gizmo has managed to stay busy with mischief. He has found a new nap spot. Maybe he is part kangaroo??? Or maybe he has a fetish for school supplies??? He is notorious for taking pencils from my studio and carrying them around the house. One thing for sure, he is hilariously entertaining.

New House Rule: Zip up school backpacks and totes in the hopes of discouraging stowaways.

Well, let's look at the bright side:

1) "Hot Stuff" gave up the ghost before I started torching, so luckily no beads were harmed in the incident.

2) The replacement unit is being shipped.

3) The element lasted for over 7 years... that is pretty incredible considering it was used almost daily.

Spring Romance Necklace

Another View:

Is it Springtime yet? We have experienced a mild Winter so far (knock on wood). Definitely nothing to complain about, no snow to report and lovely temperatures. I'm starting to think about the garden spot and a list of vegetables to plant this coming year. The side yard needs some attention after the city sewer project made it to our street, maybe a new flower bed is in order? Some tulip and iris bulbs would make for a nice addition. The raised strawberry bed will also be expanded, one cannot have too many berries. Until then, I will dream in glass of flowers and happy honeybees. Enjoy!

The new blue in "Spring Romance" reminds me of a lovely French linen. The main focal actually has a lace design on the base of the bead in white and flower decorations over top. The spacers are a soft pink to match the pinks in the floral design. Enjoy!

Ebon Tide No.2

"Ebon Tide No.2" has been in the works for more than 1year. I have been hoarding focals for the lovely set design. The first bead made was the murrini focal (upper right) which is decorated with fine silver, raku and dots. The next bead to follow was Terra, the encased skinny tot focal with wisps of pinks, purples, copper greens, blues, and earth tones. The urchin inspired focal has a base made from original Double Helix Terra which was encased in pale lavender and dotted with sleek black. The silver purple disc accent (left of the urchin), was sprinkled with fine Terra dust to give it a sandy glow. Last but not least, the main starfish focal showcases silver purples, raku, raised dots, and a base of ivory and transparents.

It sounds cliché, but the photo doesn't do it justice. The silver purple glass is difficult to photograph due to the reflective nature. In person, one can see the intricate ultra-mini dots on the star's surface and the depth of purple color. The main focal size is 17mm. Enjoy!

Lately, I have been obsessed with dottie lentil accents, especially pastels with sleek black. "Sweet Lavender & Honey" combines soft lavender and more dots... hooray! Years back, I purchased the bee tutorial from Kerri Fuhr. Finally getting the groove and loving the most recent beads that have emerged from the kiln. The honeybee focal is a nice 17mm size, perfectly accented by the 14mm dottie lentils. Enjoy!

Busted! Sleeping on the job aye? I leave the studio for 3 minutes and return to find the "office manager" in the middle of a cat nap. I had no idea the packages were so comfy... who knew? I'm sure he has a good excuse, maybe "testing the bubble wrap" or "keeping the beads warm"??? Ok then, take a nap, but make it quick... the post office closes in a couple hours.

On another note, loved the first set of "Angel Kisses" so much, had to make another. Switched the pale lavender discs for some pink accents. Enjoy!

Peace: A Mickey inspired, super groovy set. I had the idea for peace while driving the other day. A simple, plain black vinyl MM on a mini van caught my eye. It was almost unnoticeable against the tinted window... what if it was brighter with something fun to liven it up??? Well I grabbed a pencil and sketched the focal on the back of a receipt before the light changed green, then later filled it in with colored pencils. Happy with how it turned out.

"Gnome Sweet Gnome" is a fairytale inspired creation. The kids and I are reading the Sisters Grimm book series. The main characters (Sabrina and Daphne) hop from foster home to foster home after their parents mysteriously disappear. They finally end up in the care of their long-lost grandmother who lives in a town populated by Everafters, live characters from fantasy and fairy tales. The family has a gift of solving mysteries, some connected to the disappearance of their parents. The Scarlet Hand, an evil group of Everafters, is determined to find a way out of the barrier (created by one of the Grimms' ancestors) that keeps the Everafters imprisioned in the town unless the Grimms abandon Ferryport Landing or all the descendent's of the past and future are dead.

Driving through the Rockies this past week, I had to stop and ask: "Can anyone else see color?" It seems that grey Winter was finally upon us. The only trace of color lingered in the fading sunlight. I closed my eyes to dream of color. Designs danced in my mind, bathed in an array of colors. My notebook/pencil were carelessly forgotten at home, so I made mental note for later torch time. I look forward to getting back into the swing of things at the torch. Definitely won't miss hour after hour in the car and hearing the timeless question: "Are we there yet?"

Antiqued Christmas Enamels

It's time to put up the Christmas tree and break out the Holiday CDs. I've had some fun playing with enamels. Finally getting the hang of the process after tweeking the application approach. This lovely set could easily be made into a Christmas bracelet or split into pairs for Year-round earrings. The beads are ultra smooth 14mm rounds with a wonderful antiqued iron patina. A bit larger than the iron beads I used to make the "Texas Chic" earrings. Definitely an eclectic Holiday jewelry find!

Terra - The Original Batch

Double Helix's Terra was originally released in April of 2007. The incredible glass creates the most beautiful array of pinks to copper-blue-greens. Unfortunately the extremely popular glass was unstable. No longer available, the original production batch was hand drawn from an older furnace. From what I have read, the company updated their furnaces and have moved to machine pulling. The attempts to reproduce this amazing glass were nice, but in my opinion the original is beyond words. I have held onto my original Terra from 2007, using it sparingly. Here is an original Double Helix Terra lampwork creation from my stash:

Laurel & Hardy vs. Mike & Frank

My favorite show on the History Channel is American Pickers. Mike and Frank crack me up, not to mention Danielle trying to keep them in line! I enjoy watching them dig up hidden treasures in the oddest places. They remind me of a modern version of Laurel and Hardy.

The actual Antique Archaeology store is about 2 hours away, so we decided to check it out. Fun finds, great prices and what hospitality! Danielle now has some silly bling to keep her company while the guys are out digging through old barns.

If I had to wager, I would put my money on Mike & Frank in a smackdown with Laurel & Hardy. Let's face it, they have to be pretty strong to get half of that stuff in the van. Not to mention they are pro at climbing over junk and could make a quick get-away if needed. Enjoy!

Snickerdoodle

"Snickerdoodle" was handmade from a vintage palette featuring floral and stripe details. The zig-zag striped lentil pair is beautifully matched. The start and stop of the line pattern is perfectly hidden on the bead edge, so bead's reverse is the same as the face (no messy interupts). The vintage inspired floral focal also has the same matching reverse detail. Love this set!

Recycle Repurpose Reuse

After searching every furniture outlet in the area and stalking furniture listings on Craig's List, Lauren and I ran across this find.

It was at a little garage sale and needed major attention. The bones were good... solid oak drawer construction, cherry wood exterior, dove tail joints, original brass handles. The owner was only asking $15 for it (my mouth probably hit the ground, so much for a poker face). It even had a matching twin companion dresser... in much worse condition priced at $5. We splurged and purchased both, then headed to the hardware store for sandpaper, wood glue, wood putty, primer, clamps and paint.

Lauren was such a trooper. We sanded for hours in the heat, she didn't complain once. The $5 twin dresser sacrificed drawer stops, drawers, and handles to restore the much nicer $15 find.

All said, the entire project cost $30 with supplies and some elbow grease. Not too shabby.

Donna Millard's New Tutorial - Bezel Setting

For the past 2 years, I have been kicking around the thought of creating bezel setting to showcase lampwork cabs. I have even looked into taking a college class to learn to create my own bezels, but the price is beyond what I could spend right now. Stopped by Donna's site http://fyrebeadz.com/ to check on her newest murrini and found an answer to my prayer. She has created a fabulous, informative tutorial.... seriously, the word "fabulous" doesn't even come close to describing it. The supply list is so extremely detailed and even includes the product numbers and the store information. What a find! Thanks to Donna for sharing her wealth of knowledge.

Nom Nom, Pumpkin Pie & Glass?

New Colors:

Organizing the newest colors. Many of the rods are oddies that I was able to track down after lengthy searching. The colors remind me of candy. Is it bad that I want to eat the glass? I will try my best to refrain and stick with pie...

One pumpkin down, one to go. It is surprisingly easy to make homemade pumpkin pie filling. Removed the stem and scoop out the seeds (much like one would do when carving a pumpkin). Slice the pumpkin into 2-3 inch slices and place skin down in a glass 13x9 water bath. Bake at 350'F for 1 hour, checking it every 30 min. Let the pumpkin cool on the stove when finished. Scoop the pumpkin from the skin (it should easily seperate from the skin). Mash by hand with a potato masher or fork. The pumpkin is ready to use or freeze. We like to save the seeds for next year's garden. Enjoy!

Creative Tip for November: Silver Leaf, My Nemesis

Beyond frustrated.... pull my hair out frustrated. I'm the type of person who learns from trial and error. The goal was to punch silver leaf into daisy shapes. Sounds simple huh? I'm a noobie when it comes to lampwork applications of silver leaf. Initially, I was naive and tried punching it without a backing... what a mess. It was very apparent the foil needed some support. I used some paper backing and whalla! It worked pretty good.

Lemon Focal:

The next "ah-ha" moment came when trying to apply the delicate silver leaf daisy. After some trial and error, I created a glass lense and applied the silver leaf to the flat surface. Heating the focal, I then applied the lense to the center of the lemon. Not too shabby. Hope this hint helps others when playing with silver leaf.

Man's Best Friend

Is it considered procrastination or perfection? It took me 10months to finish this set... I realize that having the studio totally demolished didn't help the fact. All excuses aside, I think it turned out perfect. The color palette is my new favorite. Love the khaki, blue, clean white, and chocolate. The main focal is a Bernese Mountain Dog named "Bernie". This loyal and loving breed adores family, snow & fun. What a chunk-a-lunk! The set name is "Man's Best Friend" and I couldn't think of a more worthy title for such a wonderful companion.

Lauren would spend every waking hour at the Mall if we let her. I try to keep the visits to a minimum (once every 2 months). This past Saturday, Lauren got her fix. She spied some trendy enamel earrings in at Macys that were priced $32 (the quality didn't match the high price tag). The supplies to make the above "Mall Rat" earrings were a fraction of the originals... can't beat that. Enjoy!

Just in time for the Holiday Season, Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream announced a delicious new flavor...

"Schweddy Balls"

After a good laugh, I was off to the grocery store to track down some Schweddy Balls. I was terribly disappointed to find none in the ice cream section. I pondered asking the stock person if they had some Ben & Jerry's Schweddy Balls in the back... but thought it might not be taken as a serious request.

My friends, Jennifer and Mike, had better luck and were able to find some in Colorado. They said it was Fabulous! Since a move to Colorado is not in the realm of possibilities, I decided to get a different kind of Schweddy fix and name my next hollow focal set after the hilarious SNL skit.

Always a bit surprised when stores roll out their Holiday and Seasonal decorations months in advance, but I have come to understand why a lampworker needs to be ahead of the curve. It takes time to mail out the goodies, not to mention the time needed for jewelry designers to perfect the Holiday treasures. So yes, it is October (not even Halloween) and I'm posting more Winter themed beads. I will start to worry when I hear Christmas songs in my sleep. Off to rake leaves and paint pumpkins with the kids. Enjoy!

"Daisy Mae No.2" dare I say is a fabulous as the first. I switched up the color scheme on the polka dot encased accents and changed the pink flat daisy to have double petals. What a looker! Especially love the little tail detail on the reverse.

Ahoy me Hearties No. 2

"Ahoy me Hearties No.2" is an updated version of a previous pirate set. The parrot design was tweaked with smaller eyes, a larger beak, and kewpie feather on his head. The skull flag reverse has a sweet mini heart in red.

A Cat's Grin

Do cats really smile? Well of course silly! I would like to think that Gizmo is grinning from ear to ear in this picture:

Who knew a Capri Sun box could be so entertaining??? It is almost as exciting as the chattering squirrel who sits on the mat (right outside the front door). The squirrel "instigator" flicks his tail and barks (yes, barks) at little Gizmo... who in turn paws at the glass with no success. I'm hoping to catch it on video tomorrow. Let's hope for a frisky squirrel who is up to no good!

Rainbow Crush Mouse

Working on finishing up some custom orders. This week has been an adventure to say the least. Our little town is switching over to a new sewer system and the bulldozers arrived on our street this past week. I have been able to close the blinds and try not to think about the mess outside. We lost 6 trees, 30 feet of landscaping, and removed 45 feet of fencing... something to fix come Spring. I'm thankful it wasn't worse. A neighbor had to remove an entire deck for the "hook-up". I'm also happy to report that the Internet cable is repaired after being cut during the excavation process. Everything considered, the crew of workers were quick and polite. Flower Child Connector

"Flower Child" is my first attempt at setting gemstones. The connector features a natural rhodolite garnet with a beautiful plum hue. The piece could be used in a fun bracelet design or fabulous necklace. More to come about this piece. Enjoy!

Limited Custum Orders

Yes! I'm back and ready to do some holiday custom orders. Heck, I will even do non-holiday orders. I want to thank everyone for being so patient with me while I got my bead groove back and remodeled the studio. I use the term "limited" because I have to draw a line at some point... laundry doesn't do itself last time I checked and Peaches does occasionally need some attention (not to mention Gizmo... I think he is learning how to use the internet so I need watch my back). The spaces will fill up fast so convo me through Etsy with requests and I will get you prices on sets.

"Whisker Kisses No.2" is a definite "must hide from the kids" sets. He is absolutely AdOrAbLe! I would not be sad in the least if this little guy doesn't sell on Etsy. He is perfectly balance for stringing on a necklace and not having to worry about him flipping over. The cutiest little kewpie hair-do is upstaged by his chunky, chicklet teeth... just want to squeeze his cheeks and hug him!!!

"Poppy Fields" was a labor of love. The design and metalwork took about 1 week to complete. The lovely, one of a kind necklace is adorned with a special hand dyed silk ribbon and faceted carnelian. It is fully adjustable and able to be paired with a knitted turtleneck or a light summer blouse.

Oddies

"Odd lot" is a term in lampworking that refers to a special color variation in a glass pull. The alchemy recipe is the same as the original color, but something special happens when the glass is made. Many times the "special" oops is not able to be reproduced and rods tend to be more pricey due to the beautiful color variation. I pulled some of my special "Oddies" last night. The earthy feel of these large pandoras would be perfect for a silk sari ribbon project, fiber stringing, or an organic jewelry design. Enjoy!

Enamel Cathedrals

Torch fired enamel findings can add that unexpected pop of flavor to any eclectic jewelry design. The crisp fresh color palette was Caribbean inspired and is accented by the oxidized iron. The technique was fun to learn and relatively simple to recreate. The hardest part was finding a metal enamel distributor with a color kit that wouldn't break the bank.

... that being said, I ignored housework and focused on the studio today. The Thompson Enamels were on the list of "Clutter Offenders". They were repackaged from small zip-locks into sleek plastic containers with picture labels. Before completing the project, an array of glittered pixie dust arrived in the mail. More things to OrGaNiZe. *giddy cheer*

Gizmo was a dear and avoided "helping". Ahhh, to be a lazy cat and sleep away the afternoon!
(Does it make me a stalker to take pictures of him while he sleeps???)

Crow in the Corn

A piercing sound can be heard from the studio window... the crows are at it again. We literally live 40 paces from acres and acres of corn. The large birds land in the mature maple trees to share the latest gossip. I find half eaten cobs of dried corn littering the grass. Maybe they are trying to share with the squirrels whom also think they have full rein of the vegetable garden?
"Crow in the Corn" is a fun set featuring a silly crow gliding clumsily over a field of corn. The main focal has a special buttercream base with a layer of Thompson Enamels. The encased marble focal (on the right) features a lovely swirled Autumn palette, perfectly complimented by the light olive, flat daisy bead. Enjoy!

Just pulled these beauties from the kiln. The red photographed towards a burnt orange, but in person it is a true apple red. The citron focal is decorated with delicate raku scroll work and a white flower on the reverse. Enjoy!

Crow in Flight

At a stop sign, I spied a huge black crow with something in his beak. After a bit of gawking, I realized he was carrying a small cob of dried corn. Another crow landed nearby and seemed to be taunting him with the most ear piercing of "caws". I watched, wondering if the crow would join in and drop his precious treat. Sure enough, he couldn't resist a good "cawing" session and dropped his snack. The other crow (who apparently was much wiser than the first) flew down, snatched the yummy treat, and took flight. Moral of the story... maybe the town needs scarecrows at stop signs so I don't become sidetracked while driving. Enjoy, Heather

Newest Lentil Press

The newest lentil press finally arrived. I'm sure the mail carrier thought I was some goof-ball peeking out the window, awaiting delivery. It is from the same maker as my 20mm smooth sided lentil, but includes the smaller 14mm and 17mm sizes. The smaller tab press I used before was nice for a chunky 14mm focal (pictured in the daisies above), but I'm sold on the new sleek press.

Glass Light Pull

The idea was to make a light pull that had a bit of bling. I started with a large tapered focal made from blue dichro and Double Helix Kronos. The tapered end was then attached with a special glass epoxy. The lines of the brushed nickle pull continue to the glass focal for a teardrop effect. Enjoy!

"Mischief" is a fun set inspired by the warm color palette of Autumn. The main floral focal has a core of Double Helix Terranova that was encased. The blue tot accent also features a Double Helix core of Kronos that gives it a watery blue/green glow. Enjoy!

"Nocturnal" is a large dichro focal with lovely murrini detail. The razor cut swirls of purple were encased in a transparent crystal clear. The dichro features a shimmery array of color from rich sapphire to deep violet.

Walkabout Lampwork Pen

The glass consisted of my favorite Double Helix Kronos, Ivory, Turquoise, and Crystal Clear. Hard to believe that 4 rods could make a focal with such depth and luster. The Mother of Pearl shimmers a lovely cool blue against the creamy ivory. The ivory was reduced to add an antique lace effect. Enjoy!

"Muse" is my first attempt at double encasing. I started with a base of encased turquoise, then added the fun spiral stripe encased layer. To finish off the focal, dotty accents, a blue coneflower with pink petals, and lines were added.
